Kerala style Fish Stew/Fish molly/Fish moilee #AuthenticKerala #FishStew #fishMolly #KeralaStyle

"Authentic Kerala style fish stew prepared with marinated fried fish,coconut milk and spices and designed to mesmerise the taste buds with every mouthful"

Ingredients:

  • Onions 2 finely sliced

  • Tomato 1 finely sliced for garnish

  • Green chilli 2 slit into juliennes

  • Garlic 5 cloves finely chopped

  • Ginger 1 inch cube size .. finely chopped

  • Curry leaves - a small handful

  • Black pepper powder- 1/2 tsp

  • Cashews 5

  • Coconut 2 cups grated

  • Coconut oil 2 tbsp

For marination:

  • Fish 1/2 kg -seer fish (or any desired fish )

  • Salt 1/2 tsp

  • Turmeric powder 1/2 tsp

  • Pepper powder 1-2tsp

  • Lime juice 1 tsp

For tempering:

  • Mustard seeds 1tsp

  • Cardamom pods 4

  • cinnamon 1 small stick

  • Cloves 4

  • Bay leaf 1

  • Curry leaves a small handful

Prep work :

Wash the fish and make desired size pieces.

Marinate with salt , turmeric powder , pepper powder and keep aside for 20 minutes.Add 1 tbsp of coconut oil to a frying pan and shallow fry gently on each side taking care not to burn the fish.


Grind the coconut in a mixie with adequate warm water to make up one cup. Extract the coconut milk (this is the first milk and is the thickest).Repeat the process by regrinding coconut pulp with water to get a second and 3rd cup of coconut milk. (This is the thinner version and can be used to cook the fish in)Keep it aside.




Soak the cashews in warm water for 20 minutes and grind to a smooth paste later.




Cooking process:

Add 1 tbsp of coconut oil to a heated stew pan .

Once oil is hot add the ingredients mentioned under tempering.

Add the sliced onions , chopped ginger , garlic and slit green chillies .


Sauté the above for 2 minutes till the onions becomes translucent.

Add turmeric powder and salt ,sauté for another minute.


Next pour the 2 cups of thin extract of coconut milk and bring to boil.

Now add the fried fish pieces one by one gently into the stew mix and cook for 5 minutes under medium flame with lid closed .


Remove the lid and sprinkle pepper powder.

Mix the ground cashew paste with the thick extract of coconut milk without any lumps.

Add this to the stew and cook for a minute on low flame,

-just enough to blend well with the stew mix .


In another small pan heat 1 tbsp of coconut oil,add the curry leaves .

Once it splutters add it to the stew.

Transfer to a serving bowl .

Garnish with sliced tomatoes.

Now your yummy delicious Kerala style fish stew is ready to be enjoyed as a side with appam or Idiyyapam.
